High Point Market Trends

Suzanne Manlove | May 19, 2016 | No Comments

After spending three days at the High Point Furniture Market, I discovered several wonderful new vendors that we plan to start using for upcoming projects. It’s always a thrill to be at market and see all of the new introductions.

Hair Chic!

We love our hair-on-hide. It used to be that you’d drape a Mongolian hide over a chair to transform it – now the chair is being made of it. I saw more outrageous versions of hides, hair and faux hair this market. Used sparingly, it can add some texture and warmth to a room. It speaks of luxury, or a good sense of humor.

Celebrate The Joys Of Open-Air Living

Suzanne Manlove | Mar 31, 2016 | No Comments

Spring is coming! Are you ready?

Reading the Sunday paper on the porch in my pj’s, stealing an afternoon nap on the patio sectional, dining al fresco with family and friends under twinkly lights, making s’mores over the fire pit — these are a few of my favorite things to do when we shift into warmer temps.

Never before has there been so many choices to create outdoor havens for relaxing and entertaining.

Holiday Table Setting

Suzanne Manlove | Dec 17, 2015 | No Comments

Planning a holiday table can feel intimidating, but in reality, you don’t have to do much to make a table beautiful. At my house, the dining room table is gift wrapping central through Christmas Eve, but, for those of you blessed with more space, one of these centerpieces could live in your dining room for the whole holiday season. Here are a few ideas, some simple, some which require a little bit more planning, to help your holiday meals feel special.

WITH TURQUOISE:

Turquoise is becoming a favorite holiday color. Makes me think of frozen things, and it pairs beautifully with gold and silver. I am not one for fussy – where does the napkin ring go after you’ve started using the napkin? Do the hostess collect them or leave do you just leave them on the table?

Holiday Decorating with Nature

Suzanne Manlove | Dec 3, 2015 | No Comments

This post was inspired by a trip to HomeGoods that my daughter and I made this weekend. We walked in and I thought to myself, “I don’t even want to bring any of this stuff home…” Decorating can be a little bit daunting these days with so much going on in our lives. And purchasing a lot of decor made in China to finish a home can be a little bit boring and impersonal.

I like to decorate with collections of things (ornaments, pinecones, santa clauses), along with favorite ‘memory pieces’ from my childhood, and nature. I mix natural things in with my small collection of decorations, and I can create a new look every year. Here is some inspiration from that treasure trove of ideas, the internet, to help you get inspired this year. Perhaps a walk in the woods is a good start.

Ah, High Point Market!

Suzanne Manlove | Oct 29, 2015 | No Comments

Every year I travel to North Carolina to furniture mecca. Attending this twice yearly event is essential to a healthy design business, IMO. Imagine spending 3 (or more) days looking at the latest in trends and furnishings, all day, every day, until you cannot walk any further, talking a mile a minute with fellow designers (old friends and new), about business (what’s working, what’s not and why you love it so), and constantly being offered a drink or a tasty bite to eat (the showrooms seem to believe that booze is the way to win us over, but I try to abstain until the work is done). That craziness is High Point. This year I had the opportunity to bring Mark along. It was so great to see things anew through his eyes. It was like an extended super Suzanne date, complete with drool-worthy furniture, craft beers and a comfy hotel. It will be hard to go back to High Point without Mark. And I’m happy to report that he really enjoyed himself!

Here are a few highlights and trends we saw. I’ve also been putting updates on Instagram. If you’re interested, you can find me at www.instagram.com/suzannemanlove

Decorative Painting

Suzanne Manlove | Oct 8, 2015 | 2 Comments

I’ve been thinking about decorative painting lately.  I’m working on large home in McLean that has many different hand-painted finishes on the walls (Venetian plaster, linens, metallic, stencils) and on the furniture (faux wood and faux marble) and I am reminded how powerful this can be as an alternative to flat paint. Decorative painting has been around throughout the history of interior design, and, with the correct execution, can be a great tool to evoke a mood and add character to a room.

Every chair needs a table

Flavia Heupel | Sep 3, 2015 | No Comments

Small side or accent tables are a quick and easy way to add not only function, but style and character to a room. They come quite handy next to a chair, when you need a resting spot for your cup of  tea or your favorite book. These little movable pieces of art can also add whimsy, texture and scale to your seating area.

Below are a few of our favorites, both to-the-trade (that means we buy them for you) and retail options:

Boho Art Wall

Suzanne Manlove | Mar 5, 2012 | No Comments

My hubby and I have been wanting an art wall in our bedroom for a while, and as usual,  just never seemed to find the right time to execute. We finally got rid of the TV armoire which freed up the wall – the last time we watched TV was Obama’s election night. We’d been collecting photos and prints, and had recently picked up some amazing band posters from the incredibly talented Nate Duval when we were browsing the Crafty Bastards show this past October. Well, this weekend it happened! All that dreaming and planning made it easy to pull off, and in a few hours we had it done, done, done! (Happy dance here!!) Things take for-eva at our house. Seriously. Read the full article
