I am often asked to define my design style. That’s a complicated question, as I like so many styles. When I design for a client, my goal is to create something that reflects their style and preferences, not mine. I like some traditional, transitional, contemporary, bohemian, flea market and eclectic mixes of all of the above. But I know I do have a style, so, I’ve been trying to figure it out by pinning images from designers I like and looking for running themes. Just like I tell my clients, “show me images you are attracted to, and I’ll figure it out.”
A designer who has captured my attention this week by gracing the November cover of House Beautiful is Ashley Whittaker. I love her attention to detail and use of color and pattern. She is described as a neo-traditionalist with a “fresh and modern perspective on traditional design and architecture in all of her work.” Love how concise that is. This woman knows what her style is.
In this gorgeous dining room, her very traditional wall paper is the perfect background for her fresh lilacs and blues. It’s just the right mix of formal furnishings with modern chairs and trending brass details. This rooms is not one style but a well-curated mix of many.
